Ruthie gets a finger pop! |
September 12th has always been a memorable day for me.
First of all, it's my dad's birthday.
Happy reason to remember 9/12 every year.
Then in 1977 {I was in first grade}, I was given another, not-so-happy reason to remember 9/12
~ Hurricane Frederick made landfall in Mobile. WOW! What memories those are!
Of course September 12 is the day after 9/11 and that is a complete set of memories that stands alone.
September 12, 2010, will now be the most memorable ever. AGP was a sick puppy all day on 9/11/10 and all night long. John was out of town {Dothan} running and cycling with Uncle Matt. After trying unsuccessfully to make AGP feel better, we went to the Pediatric Clinic on Sunday morning as soon as they opened. I rattled off the list of strange and seemingly unrelated symptoms to the DOOGIE HOWSER doctor expecting to hear the same ol' diagnosis and orders ~ "it is just a virus, take her home and treat the symptoms, and call if she is not better in 7 - 10 days."
No such luck.
The very young and not very warm doctor said,
"We are going to test for diabetes. We need a blood and urine sample." HELLO - what?
Can you say that again, maybe a little slower and with a touch of feeling?
{Where, oh where is Dr. Glaze? Oh, yes, in Tuscaloosa for the football game!}
So, we gave a urine sample, a blood sample, and drank a few more cups of water.
AGP fell asleep in my lap while we waited for the doctor to return. She finally returned with a few words, "Yes, I was correct. AGP has diabetes and we need to admit her to the hospital right away."
GULP!!!
Our world changed and quickly.
Friday night was football and friends with no clue our world was changing!
Sunday was Type I Diabetes and a hospital stay.
AGP is a trooper and she is adjusting pretty well.
I have no doubts that she will have a happy, successful, and normal life.
I am aware of all the diseases, birth defects, and disabilities that she could have been diagnosed with...
But it's hard, sticking needles in her 4 times a day,
"popping" her finger 6 to 8 times a day,
and counting every carbohydrate that comes within a mile of her mouth!
John, AGP, Winston, and I will find our new normal, learn all we can learn about this disease,
and love each other more each day than we did the one before!
AGP draws a dose of saline for Rufus and Ruthie. |
Wonder where Rufus picked for this shot to go? |
AGP hates her shots on her leg. Wonder how Ruthie got so lucky? |
